Pastoral Team (Team Member-Care to Share Team)

Members of this team use their own experiences to help and support those who are encountering a similiar trauma in their lives.

Responsible To: Pastoral Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett)
Time Committment: Very occasional, as required
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • To consider how a past trauma can be used to benefit someone going through a similar experience (Examples may include miscarriage, infertility, adoption, domestic abuse, redundancy, serious illness, divorce, depression etc.)
  • To be available if asked by the Clergy or Pastoral Coordinator to visit and support a member of St John's who is struggling with a problem that you have faced in the past but survived due to Christ's love and the caring support of those in the church.
  • To be aware of the need for strict confidentiality and only offering to share personal information with others when the person concerned has given their permission
  • To be willing (in complete confidence) to share your experience with the Pastoral Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett) so that support for the Team Member can be provided
  • To keep a basic diary of all visits including dates and times
  • To respect the boundaries of support that can be given to an individual

A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Honest, Dependable and can maintain strict confidentiality
  • Is comfortable and has the strength to deal with personal grief and pain from the past in order to help others
  • Is friendly, patient and has good relational skills
  • Has a spirit of love, compassion and kindness
  • Is a good listener and can communicate clearly with others
  • Is able to recognise boundaries of support and is able to ask for guidance and advice from the Pastoral Team Coordinator if this becomes unclear

In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • An initial meeting with the Pastoral Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett) then ongoing help and support, when required
