Pastoral Team (Coordinator-Bereavement VisitingTeam)

To visit the partner/family following a funeral at St John's at the request of the Bereavement Team Coordinator

Responsible To: Bereavement Team Coordinator (Margaret Bailey)
Time Committment: As agreed with the Bereavement Team Coordinator
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Visit the partner/family of someone whose funeral took place at St John's, at the request of the Bereavment Team Coordinator (Margaret Bailey)
  • Be aware of the need for strict confidentiality and only offer to share personal information with others with the person's permission
  • Able to attend the orientation session, training sessions and regular meetings as required
  • Able to convey any information to the Bereavement Team Coordinator (Margaret Bailey) any concerns regarding the spiritual, health or practical needs of the bereaved person(s)
  • Able to keep a basic diary of all visits including dates and times

A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Non judgemental attitude towards those who are bereaved
  • Honest, dependable and able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Able to deal with the grief and pain of the bereaved whilst empathising with them
  • Is friendly, patient and has good relational skills
  • Has a spirit of love, compassion and kindness
  • Is a good listener and can communicate clearly with others

In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • St John's Bereavement Visitor Orientation and Welcome meeting
  • Ongoing training arranged with the Bereavement Team Coordinator (Margaret Bailey) and/or an experienced Bereavement Visitor
  • Ongoing advice and support from Bereavement Team Coordinator (Margaret Bailey)
  • Occasional support meetings for all St John's Visiting Teams
