Mark

Introduction

The book of Mark is believed to be the earliest of all gospels. The author, that is Mark, records an eyewitness account of the life of Jesus as given through the teachings and preaching material of Peter, Christ's apostle. Mark walked very closely to Peter who calls him 'Mark, my son' (1 Peter v13).

The New Testament tells us much about this young man called Mark. He was the son of a well-to-do lady of Jerusalem whose name was Mary and whose house was a meeting place for the early church (Acts 12 v12). Mark was brought up in the very centre of the Christian fellowship. Mark was also Barnabas' nephew, setting off with his uncle and Paul on their first missionary journey as their secretary and attendant (Acts 12 v25). for some unclear reason he fell into disfavour with Paul on the journey and returned home (Acts 13 v 13). However, by the time Paul was in prison awaiting death, Mark had regained his trust and become his 'useful servant' (2 Timothy 4 v 11).

Characteristics of Mark's Gospel

Mark's gospel is the closest we will ever get to a biography of Jesus - it is his delight to share the facts of Jesus' life in the simplest and most dramatic way.
