Pastoral Team (Coordinator-Outreach Holy Communion Team)

To coordinate members of all St John's Home Communion Teams by ensuring that residents and staff of local nursing homes, have the opportunity to receive Holy Communion at least once a month, on site. To arrange to take Holy Communion to people in their own homes on a temporary or permanent basis. To work with the Clergy to ensure Easter and Christmas Holy Communion is taken by Clergy to those unable to get to church through incapacity.

Responsible To: Pastoral Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett/Clergy)
Time Committment: Approx. 1 hour per week to liaise and organise.
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Keep an up to date record of all team members who take out Home Communion and a record of those requiring Home Communion including those who require Clergy visits at Christmas and Easter
  • Ensure that the four nursing homes receive Holy Communion at the arranged time
  • Select a visitor from the Home Communion Team to take out Communion to a person temporarily or permanently housebound (and to their partner/family/friend if appropriate)
  • Record visit details and liaise with the Pastoral Coordinator if any further pastoral help is required
  • Provide ongoing support to members of the Home Communion Team
  • Liaise on a regular basis with the Pastoral Coordinator


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Organised, dependable and is able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Can listen effectively and communicate clearly with others
  • Is friendly, sensitive and patient
  • Has a spirit of love and compassion and feels comfortable communicating with Clergy, Nursing and Care home staff and members of the Outreach Communion Team
  • Able to coordinate and support a team of volunteers


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • Initial and ongoing support from the Pastoral Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett)
  • Occasional meetings for all members of the Outreach Team
