Pastoral Team (Team Member-Hospice Visiting Team)

To visit patients in Queenscourt Hospice, at the request of the Clergy

Responsible To: Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator
Time Committment: Variable depending on when visits are requested and the needs of individual patients
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Visit patients in Queenscourt Hospice, Southport, at the request of the Clergy
  • Able to maintain strict confidentiality and only offer to share personal information with others such as the Clergy or the Pastoral Coordinator with the person's permission (There can be extreme exceptions to this which will be discussed in training sessions)
  • Able to attend an orientation session, further training sessions and regular meetings, as required
  • Able to convey information to the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator regarding concerns about the patient's health and/or spiritual needs, taking into account confidentiality issues
  • Able to keep a basic diary of all visits including dates and times
  • Reliable and committed


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • A strong desire to serve Jesus, the church and local community through this particular ministry
  • Honest, dependable, sensitive and can maintain strict confidentiality
  • Able to respect the privacy and dignity of those who are seriously ill and also their relations/friends in a sensitive and non judgemental manner
  • Able to deal with seriously ill, dying or disabled people in a hospice environment
  • Is friendly, patient and has good relational skills
  • Able to be accountable to the Team Coordinator and is sensitive to the observance of proper boundaries
  • Has a spirit of love for others, compassion and kindness
  • Can listen effectively and communicate clearly with others
  • Able to listen to other's problems and sadness with sympathy and personal detachment


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • St John's Pastoral Visiting Team Orientation Welcome Meeting
  • Onsite training from an experienced Hospice Visitor and from the Pastoral Coordinator before visiting alone
  • Ongoing support from the Pastoral Visiting Teams Coordinator and Pastoral Coordinator
  • Occasional support meetings for all members of St John's Pastoral Visiting Teams
