Pastoral Team (VisitingTeam Member to those ill at home/in hospital)

To visit those who are ill at home or in hospital, at the request of the Clergy or Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator

Responsible To: Pastoral Team Coordinator (Jenny Cosslett)
Time Committment: Variable depending on the needs of the person
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Visit those from the church or the community who are ill in hospital or at home, when asked to do so by the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator
  • Be aware of the need for strict confidentiality and only offer to share personal information with others including the Clergy or the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator/Pastoral Coordinator, with the person's permission (There can be extreme exceptions to this which will be discussed in training sessions)
  • Able to attend the orientation session, training sessions and regular meetings, as required
  • Able to convey any information to the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator, concerning changes in the health and/or spiritual needs of the person(s) being visited, taking into account confidentiality issues
  • Keep a basic diary of all visits including dates and times


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Able to be sensitive and nonjudgmental towards those being visited and their family/friends
  • Honest, dependable and can maintain strict confidentiality
  • Able to respect the privacy and dignity of those who are ill and their family/friends
  • Able to deal with the elderly, seriously ill and/or disabled people in a hospital/home environment
  • Friendly, patient and has good relational skills
  • Able to be accountable to the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator and is sensitive to the observance of proper boundaries
  • Has a spirit of love for others, compassion and kindness
  • Can listen effectively and communicate clearly with others


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • St John's Pastoral Visiting Team Orientation Welcome Meeting
  • Onsite training from an experienced Pastoral Visiting Team member and/or from the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator before visiting alone
  • Ongoing support from the Pastoral Visiting Team and/or Pastoral Coordinator
  • Occasional support meetings for all members of St John's Visiting Team
