Pastoral Team (Team Member-Listening Ear Team)

To meet with people who have been referred to the Listening Ear service by the Clergy or Pastoral Coordinator. To provide one to one support for an individual(s)until such a time as this support is no longer required as agreed between the person, Listening Ear Team Member and/or the Pastoral Coordinator.

Responsible To: Listening Ear Coordinator
Time Committment: As agreed dependent on situation (Approx 1 hour per week per person)
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Agree to meet with a member of the congregation who has asked for one to one support, when requested to do so by the Listening Ear Coordinator
  • Agree time available and pattern of visiting with the Listening Ear Coordinator. Regularly review this with the person concerned and the Listening Ear Coordinator and agree when further help is no longer required.
  • Understand and agree realistic boundaries and ensure the person you are seeing is aware of what can and cannot be offered by the Listening Ear service.
  • Be aware of the need for strict confidentiality and only offer to share personal information with others including the Clergy or the Listening Ear and/or Pastoral Coordinators, with the persons permission. (There can be extreme exceptions to this which will be discussed in training sessions)
  • Must be willing and able to attend an initial training session and agree to meet with the Listening Ear Coordinator on a regular basis for reviews and support.
  • Must be reliable and commited to providing this service


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • A desire to serve Jesus in this sensitive ministry area
  • A non judgemental and sensitive attitude towards those asking for help through this service
  • Reliable, honest and able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Able to deal with other's problems and sadness with sympathy and personal detachment
  • Sensitive, friendly, approachable and patient
  • Must have excellent listening and communication skills
  • Has a spirit of love, compassion, caring and kindness
  • Prepared to attend regular reviews and training
  • Able to recognise appropriate boundaries and to refer concerns to the Listening Ear Coordinator


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • Initial Training session then ongoing support and advice from the Listening Ear Coordinator
