Maintenance Team (Team Member-Salting & Gritting of Churchyard Paths Team)

To work as a member of an established team to ensure that graveyard paths are safe for use by Church staff and visitors during periods of severe weather.

Responsible To: Estate Manager (David Orritt)
Time Committment: As necessary during periods of severe cold weather
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Assist in the monitoring of paths within the graveyard during periods of severe cold weather and where necessary liaise with the Churchwardens, Estate Manager and other members of the Maintenance Team to determine appropriate action
  • Assist in the spreading of salt and grit on paths as necessary to keep them in a safe condition for users
  • Assist in monitoring the stock of salt and grit located in the Church boiler house and when necessary assist in replenishing stock
  • Assist in the erection of safety notices during periods of severe weather and in their removal as necessary
  • Liaise with the Estate Manager regarding any concerns


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Be fit and healthy
  • Be able to work with minimum supervision and upon own initiative
  • Be able to work as a member of an 'on call' team
  • Have good manual dexterity
  • Have an understanding of appropriate health and safety procedures
  • Be available in the early morning to apply salt etc to paths (weekdays and/or weekends)


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • Initial training and ongoing support arranged by the Estate Manager and/or by a member of the Maintenance Team.
