Pastoral Team (Team Member-Home VisitingTeam)

To arrange visits to the housebound or those temporarily in need. This can be for a variety of reasons such as to aleviate loneliness, to offer occasional practical help (shopping etc.), to encourage, support and bring hope and a smile, to offer prayer if appropriate and to show the love, peace and healing power of Jesus

Responsible To: Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator
Time Committment: As agreed, depending on the availablility of the volunteer
                                                                                                                
As part of this role a volunteer would have the following responsibilities:
  • Agree time available and pattern of visiting with Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator
  • Understand and agree realistic boundaries and ensure the person you visit is aware of what can and cannot be offered
  • Be aware of the need for strict confidentiality and only offer to share personal information with others including Clergy, Pastoral Coordinator or Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator, with the person's permission (There can be extreme exceptions to this which will be discussed in training sessions)
  • Must be able to attend the orientation session, training sessions and regular meetings, as required
  • Able to concerns to the Pastoral Visiting Teams Coordinator/Pastoral Coordinator regarding changes in health and/or spiritual needs of the person(s) being visited, taking into account confidentiality issues
  • Keep a basic diary of all visits including dates and times


A volunteer in this role would require some or all of the following attributes:
  • Nonjudgmental attitude toward housebound parishioners and others in need
  • Honest, dependable and able to maintain strict confidentiality
  • Respects the privacy and dignity of the housebound
  • Is comfortable dealing with elderly, infirm, or disabled people
  • Is friendly, patient and has good relational skills
  • Is comfortable with being accountable to the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator and is sensitive to the observance of proper boundaries
  • Has a spirit of love for others, generosity and kindness
  • Can listen effectively and communicate clearly with others


In order for someone to be able to perform this role the following training and support will be given:
  • St John's Visitor Orientation Welcome meeting
  • Onsite training from an experienced Home Visitor and from the Pastoral Visiting Teams Coordinator before visiting alone
  • Ongoing support from the Pastoral Visiting Team Coordinator
  • Occasional support meetings for all St John's Visiting Teams
